Cape Town Roadtripping
November 8, 2018
My first long drive since getting out of hospital was back to Jakkalsfontein, an
Hour from Cape Town, so I could get a feel of being behind the wheel again. Not in Tracy but my late partner's sprightly Sedan Geoffrey. Well, my knees were so sore when I got there that I had to shelve any ideas I might of had of running on the beach!!!
I went up for my beloved Book Club, which i simply adore. We are a bunch of woman all living at Jakkalsfontein, and the first Monday of every month we get together and have supper and talk books. It is about a year since I was last there so there was lots of catching up to do and lots of talking about Tracy and all that involved my journey.
I spent two nights with my dear friend Rebecca Weaver then drove back via Darling to go to the the butcher, they really do have the best meat, 2 delicious legs of Lamb for Katherine and Zambi. I've taken over Katherine's stoep and cottage and am being looked after like a Queen. Zambi is doing my Blog and helping me write my book (more of that later, exciting times!) so we can all look forward to legs of lamb with crispy roast potatoes, gravies to die for and veggies without pneumanic bacteria! After the lamb was bought it was off to the Marmalade Cat with Rebecca. Owned and run by the brilliant Sandy Collins, it is well worth the drive from Cape Town for a lunch to dream of and her 2 shops attached to the restaurant. The one filled with unusual bits and bobs and the other with clothes which are so chic and easy to wear.
On that happy note it was back to Cape Town. Actually after my 2 days away from home I've realised that I still have a long way to go before I'm fit again - I'm exhausted
It has been a lifelong dream of mine to drive through Africa. When I realised that my trusty Toyota Conquest (fondly named Tracy) would be 20 years old this year and I would be 80, there couldn't be a better time to fulfil my dream and together with 100 years of life’s experiences, together we hope to set off on the adventure of a lifetime.
Despite my numerous offers to accompany friends across Africa, sadly no one took me up on it.
Having recently lost my partner of 33 years, raised 4 children and been a “gogo” to 9 grandchildren - I have decided that its time to be the master of my own destiny and what better time than to set off on the adventure of a lifetime?
People look at me in horror when I tell them I’m venturing forth across Africa in a 1997,1600 Toyota Conquest with close to 400 000km’s on the clock. But who else would i choose as my partner in crime? For a quarter of my life, Tracy has been my trusty stead. Windows wound down, music playing, seatbelt clipped in, I could always roar off into the sunset when I needed to.
So here we go again. Come and join me on the journey...
About Me.
